    Porsche 996.1 996 Gen 1

    1998–2001 · Flat-6 Water-Cooled · Rear-engine, rear/all-wheel drive · 300–360 hp

The water-cooled revolution. Shared "fried egg" headlights with the Boxster divided purists, but the new M96 engine was a clean-sheet design pushing the 911 into the modern era.

    Known issues to look for

    • IMS Bearing Failure

      critical

Metallic debris in oil, rumbling noise from engine, sudden catastrophic failure

Replace with LN Engineering IMS Solution or ceramic bearing; monitor oil for metal content

    • Bore Scoring (Nikasil/Alusil)

      critical

Excessive oil consumption, smoke on startup, low compression

Regular oil analysis; consider LN Engineering cylinder liners if scoring detected

    • Rear Main Seal (RMS) Leak

      moderate

Oil leak between engine and transmission, oil on clutch

Replace RMS; best done during IMS bearing replacement or clutch job

    • Coolant Pipe Failure

      critical

Coolant leak under car, overheating, plastic pipe cracks

Replace plastic coolant pipes with aluminum aftermarket upgrades
